#1 Bacon Mania
“That weird period in like 2013 where everything was bacon-flavored.”
Back in 2013, it seemed like you couldn’t turn a corner without running into something bacon-flavored. From bacon costumes to bacon toothpaste to bacon flavored muffins, the craze reached absurd levels. It was like the world had collectively decided that everything was better with a side of bacon.
#2 Cupcake Craze
“Cupcake bakeries popping up everywhere about 15 years ago.”
Suddenly, it was all about fancy cupcakes with elaborate frosting designs and unique flavor combinations. About 15 years ago, cupcake mania swept the nation, transforming the humble dessert into a culinary sensation. These miniature treats became a canvas for creativity, with bakeries competing to concoct the most decadent and visually stunning cupcakes imaginable.
#3 Cup Stacking
“Cup Stacking..I had a whole set with cups, timer, and mat. Best part was the cups glow in the dark. I would always take my cups outside, then rush to my room and stack with the light off.”
Ever heard of cup stacking? It was a whole thing back in the day. With special cups, a timer, and even a glow-in-the-dark set for extra flair, cup stacking competitions were all the rage.
#4 Juicy Couture
“When I was in high school, it was common to see whole packs of girls wearing those velvet tracksuits, and then it just stopped.”
Remember when Juicy Couture tracksuits were everywhere? In high school, it seemed like every girl owned one of those plush velvet tracksuits. Then, almost overnight, they disappeared from the fashion scene, leaving us wondering what happened to all those bedazzled logos.
#5 Chocolate Milk Madness
“In our town, we had this company release a chocolate milk. People went bonkers. It was in the news every day, people lined up outside grocery stores to get it, mass shortages everywhere. About 2 weeks in, it just stopped. The milk is still there; people just gave up on the craze seemingly overnight. It was weird. The milk is good, as good as chocolate milk can be, I guess. But yeah.”
#6 Golden Kit Kats
“I had people messaging me to buy them a couple of boxes if I found them, because I worked in a grocery store. It was made worse because they were “limited edition.”
Australia had its own craze over golden Kit Kats, with people going to great lengths to get their hands on the limited-edition treats. Even years later, they’re still sitting on store shelves, a relic of a bygone trend that captivated the nation.
#7 BBM Boom
“BBM was huge in the US for a bit, then everyone migrated to iPhones.”
BBM, or BlackBerry Messenger, was all the rage in the US for a hot minute. But as smartphones became more popular, everyone migrated to iPhones, and BBM faded into obscurity faster than you can say, “Send me a pin.”
#8 Magic Eye Pictures
Remember those Magic Eye pictures you had to stare at for ages to see what was hidden inside? It was like a visual puzzle that drove everyone crazy trying to unlock its secrets. Even Seinfeld had an episode dedicated to it. Today, no one really cares about them.
#9 Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers
“Those Lisa Frank trapper keepers covered with brightly colored, ultra flamboyant, psychedelic fever dream inspired illustrations of dolphins, unicorns, rainbows, etc. They were so in your face that you pretty much had to respect them no matter what your attitude towards that kind of art was. I remember a time when it seemed like virtually every girl in elementary school had one of them.”
#10 Ice Bucket Challenge
For a brief moment, the Ice Bucket Challenge took social media by storm, with everyone from celebrities to your next-door neighbor dumping buckets of ice water over their heads in the name of charity. It was a chilly way to raise awareness and funds for ALS research.
#11 Feather Hair Extensions
“When girls used to put those weird long thin feathers in their hair as extensions.”
Once upon a time, girls everywhere were rocking those long, thin feather hair extensions like they were the height of fashion. It was a trend that had everyone feeling a little bit like a bohemian princess.
#12 Kanye West Shutter Shades
Who could forget those Kanye West shutter shades that made absolutely no sense but somehow became a fashion statement? They were the perfect accessory for when you wanted to block out the haters in style.
#13 Mustache Mania
The obsession with mustaches once reached absurd levels, with people getting mustache tattoos on their fingers and mustache-themed everything. It was like they collectively decided that upper lip hair was the height of sophistication.
#14 Cabbage Patch Dolls
“Cabbage Patch dolls were all the rage. Every kid had to have one.
So my mom bought me one that ate. They’d start eating whenever a sensor detected anything near their mouth. The first day I owned it I decided to hug my doll, I had long hair. It began eating my hair! No matter how hard I pulled I couldn’t get my hair out of it’s mouth. I ran up the stairs screaming while this doll maniacally climbed my hair using it’s mouth. My mom was thankfully in the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife and just sawed off the portion of my hair being devoured. We both stared in horror as the doll now on the floor, continued to consume my hair.
I was lucky, before it got recalled there were a good number of kids who were scalped by that atrocity.”
#15 Harlem Shake
“Sometimes I go on YouTube, search for Harlem Shake, and limit the search to “last day”. There’s always a few videos, some will be re uploaded from 2012, but some are new. Then I like the video that I feel deserves it the most.”
For a brief moment in time, the Harlem Shake was everywhere, with people uploading videos of themselves doing the iconic dance. It was a meme before memes were even a thing, and it had everyone shaking their groove thang.
#16 Pogs
“Pogs were so dope! I had an OJ Simpson slammer, and my favorite pog just had a tiny spoonful of peas on it and the text “Give Peas A Chance.” Good times.”
Pogs were the ultimate ’90s collectible, with their colorful designs and slammer battles causing playground mayhem. These little cardboard discs brought endless entertainment and nostalgia to a generation. Ah, the memories of trading, stacking, and slamming.
#17 Gel Pens and Smelly Stuff
“Scented pens – everyone in school had them and everyone was going around sniffing their pens.”
Gel pens and smelly markers were the ultimate school supplies, with scented stuff, in general, being a huge trend that seemingly disappeared overnight. Scratch ‘n sniff stickers, pens, markers, nail polish—you name it, if it smelled good, we wanted it.
